Welcome

The Power of School Librarians

Welcome to Ranburne Elementary Library

Our library is student-centered. It is operated based on the needs of the student population.

Goal

The goal of the media services program at RES is to provide appropriate media in an organized collection and the means and skills for utilizing these materials to meet the needs and interests of the students and faculty.

Scheduling

The RES Media Center is open each school day from 7:00 A.M.- 3:00 P.M.  Students must come with a purpose for learning and classroom permission for book circulation and/or research.  Faculty members are welcome to browse and pick up materials in person or notify the media specialist of needs via email, phone, or student messenger.

Teachers are encouraged to plan class lessons that include research and/or the use of reference materials and to schedule a time for classes to meet in the library to utilize the resources the library media center has available. Teacher and media specialist collaboration beforehand ensures the best use of resources and time.

Instruction

Orientation in the use of the media center and its facilities will be provided for all students at the

beginning of the year. Other class instruction is available upon request of the teacher as needed. Instructional lessons available are using Internet resources, evaluating websites, using the Alabama Virtual Library, instruction in using Renaissance Learning products, instruction in the use of e-books, as well as other information literacy topics. See the library media specialist to request one of these lessons or to request another topic.

Materials and Usage

Books in the general circulation can be checked out for a period of two weeks and may be renewed two times. Students may have four books on loan at a time. Special permission may be granted for additional loans. The reference collection is limited to in-house use by students. Teachers may borrow reference materials for use in the classroom when necessary. Faculty may check out unlimited numbers of materials as long as needed. Periodicals and other equipment must be out at the circulation desk if taken outside the library media center. Items should be returned after use so that others may use them.

Audiovisual materials and equipment are for faculty use only. With teacher permission, students may use audiovisual material in the media center to make up a class assignment.

Magazines are not to be taken out of the library media center by students, but may be checked out by faculty members. Students may request a copy of an article from the media specialist.

Technology

The policies for using technology in the classroom are the same as those outlined in the Cleburne County and Ranburne Elementary School Technology Plans. Students using the Internet in the library must have an Internet form on file with the school, giving parental approval for usage.
